Mary Lindstrom, Hide and Seek Poster II, 2023, immersive installation
SVA Flatiron Gallery
133/141 West 21st Street, 1st floor, New York, NY 10011
School of Visual Arts (SVA) presents “Hide and Seek,” an interactive installation by BFA Computer Art student Mary Lindstrom, on view Wednesday, April 19, through Thursday, May 4, 2023, at the SVA Flatiron Gallery, 133 W 21st St, New York City.
Mary Lindstrom’s senior thesis show “Hide and Seek” is a transcendental metaphysical journey of matter from primordial essence to final physical form realized by interactive technologies, 3D software and projection mapping. The exhibition features sound composed by metra.vestlud.
There are seven evolutionary sequences of visuals that are projected: essence, transmutation, color, pattern, nature, physicality, reality. The synergy of visual and audio components, as well as some interactive elements, transport the viewer into an ethereal environment conducive to contemplation and child-like exploration.
The parallel of narrative to that of a living being reinstates the idea of animism. This emotionally nuanced viewpoint cultivates a more compassionate existence and attempts to subvert the day-to-day anthropocentric dynamics that inevitably permeate one’s spiritual nucleus, thus appreciating both man’s achievements and nature’s liminal holding spaces that are void of his interjections. This project is a call to inspire reverence for life and subtly reaffirm the sacredness of all. It is a nudge towards a more cohesive existence through attunement of oneself within space.
BFA Computer Art, Computer Animation and Visual Effects students have access to the most advanced applications and are guided by faculty at the top of their fields to develop the capabilities necessary to succeed in highly competitive creative industries. Using a production-based curriculum, students create portfolios and gain the experience necessary to launch them into professional careers of their own design or at many of the top digital agencies, animation studios and visual effects houses around the world working in the fields of commercial film, television and video game production.
