S.J. Langer is a writer and psychotherapist in New York City, where he maintains a private practice. He is on faculty at School of Visual Arts in both the MPS Art Therapy and Humanities & Sciences departments. His most recent academic article "Trans Bodies and the Failure of Mirrors" was the co-winner of the Symonds Prize from Studies in Gender and Sexuality. His first book Theorizing Transgender Identity for Clinical Practice: A New Model for Understanding Gender (2019) is available from Jessica Kingsley Publishers.

D. M. Maynard, MS/MA, is a veteran teacher with more than 30 years of experience in the field of education and the founder/director of Maynard’s W.I.S.D.O.M., Inc., an education service for parents, caregivers, teachers, administrators and students. She has spoken at conferences within the U.S. and throughout the world, supporting gender diversity for children and giving voice to the partners of those in transition. She presented her published chapters: "Introducing Gender Equality in the Early Childhood Classroom" in Warsaw, Poland and "The Magic of a Creative and Engaging Classroom" at Oxford University, England. In March of 2018, Maynard presented at WPATH in Buenos Aires, Argentina, based on the chapter she co-wrote with Olivia Fischer for the Psychotherapy Center for Gender and Sexuality’s upcoming book titled, Sex, Sexuality and Trans Identities: Clinical Guidance for Psychotherapists and Counselors, soon to be released with Jessica Kingsley Publishers (JKP) in September of 2019. Maynard's first book, The Reflective Workbook for Partners of Transgender People: Your Transition as Your Partner Transitions, is the first in the series of three books, which is now available with JKP.

Objectives:

1. Attendees will acquire practical skills to help partners communicate with their significant other about their personal needs and any concerns they may have in relation to the transition process by being given a chance to ask questions in a whole group setting, verbally interact with other participants in a pair-share dialogue based on posed scenarios and learn about the various journeys of partners through didactic lecture.

2. Attendees will gain a clearer understanding of what their own role may be when working with their clients during the transition process of their loved one and how to assist them as they determine what portions, if any, they will be comfortable to partake in, in the way of learning about various options others have elected to do and reviewing resources which will focus on their specific concerns and possible challenges.

3. Attendees will attain the knowledge of how to support clients to intentionally self-reflect upon and navigate their own path as the transition process progresses through guided discussions, personal journaling and easy exercises by exploring critical topics, such as: the unknowns, stages of possible, grief, sex and intimacy, therapeutic options, couple communication, disclosure or not, nurturing themselves and moving forward.
