School of Visual Arts presents “Daytripping Procedures,” an exhibition of works by SVA students selected by a jury of their peers. Organized by SVA Galleries, “Daytripping Procedures” is on view Saturday, August 25, through Saturday, September 8, at the SVA Flatiron Gallery, 133/141 West 21st Street, New York City.

“Daytripping Procedures” features artwork that uses recognizable forms to stimulate both playfully humorous and inquisitive modes of observation. Each exhibiting artist tailors a unique and surreal context in which to provoke critical questioning on topics ranging from the viewers themselves to society at large. Works include illustrations, sculptures, paintings and photographs.

Crystal-Anne Chijindu (MPS Digital Photography), using her skills as a food photographer, reflects on the fragments of life that are often discarded without much thought by photographing discarded edible materials in the same way she photographs fresh, whole foods.

Patrick Edell (BFA Illustration), in highly detailed drawings and paintings, uses his experiences living in New York City to create a macro view of city life expressed through a stream-of-consciousness approach to the paper.

Chloe M. Giroux (BFA Illustration) tells stories with a wide variety of illustration techniques, emphasizing the sensuous qualities of detailed line-work and emotive renderings of subjects.

Daniel Montenegro (BFA Illustration) portrays politicians as animals in illustrations that employ caricature to criticize those in power.

Marianna Peragallo (MFA Fine Arts) uses playfulness and humor to investigate the tensions and boundaries in interpersonal relationships. The works are exaggerated visualizations of what it means to love intensely and how that intensity can border on consumption, violence, or physical over-extension.

Phil Rabovsky (MFA Art Practice) combines a belief in humanism with classical art forms. His paintings and mixed-media works utilize postmodern critique to analyze standards of beauty and value in Western history.

Juried exhibitions are a way for SVA’s student body to recognize the achievements of their most distinguished classmates. Artists are selected from a large pool of applicants to the annual SVA Galleries call for entries, whose submissions undergo a rigorous examination of presented materials, including documentation of work and artist statements.
