School of Visual Arts (SVA) presents “Dwelling in Motion,” a juried exhibition of works by SVA students. Organized by SVA Galleries, “Dwelling in Motion” is on view Tuesday, August 9, through Monday, September 19, 2022, at the SVA Flatiron Gallery, 141 West 21st Street, New York City.

"Dwelling in Motion" analyzes the constantly growing relationship between habitat and inhabitant. In the same way that someone occupies a room or lives in a community, internal entities also take up residence in our lives, including our personalities and identities. These facets of oneself change and mature over time, creating unique structures that give form to knowledge and emotions. The ten artists in this exhibition use a variety of media, including textiles, painting, photography and sculpture. Connecting the bodies, societies and spaces we live within, these works portray the memories, disorders and ideals that inspire and shape our experiences.

The artists in this exhibition include Anoushka Bhalla (MFA Fine Arts), Lanyi Gao (MFA Fine Arts), Reese Herrington (BFA Photography and Video), Davina Hsu (MFA Fine Arts), David Kim (BFA Fine Arts), Sophia Santella (MA/MAT Art Education), Inna Smolina (BFA Visual and Critical Studies), Ruoxin Sun (BFA Fine Arts) and Xi Zhou (MPS Fashion Photography).

Juried exhibitions are a way for SVA students to recognize the achievements of their most distinguished classmates. Artists are selected from a large pool of applicants to the annual SVA Galleries call for entries, whose submissions undergo a rigorous examination of presented materials, including documentation of work and artist statements.

The SVA Flatiron Gallery is open Monday – Saturday, 10:00am – 6:00pm. In accordance with SVA COVID-19 protocols, daily in-person visitation is limited to SVA students, faculty and staff.
