Exhibition

School of Visual Arts presents “Fix!,” an exhibition of work by first-year MFA Design for Social Innovation students. Curated by 3D Design Chair Kevin O’Callaghan, the exhibition is on view January 10 through 30 at the SVA Gramercy Gallery, 209 East 23rd Street, New York City. Admission is free and open to the public.

Participating artists include Sultana Abbar, Azmina Alimohd, Manolo Ampudia, Ivan Boscariol, Kyle Calian, Nazli Cangonul, Barbara Fang, Lauren Gardner, Yinman Guo, Emily Herrick, Grace Hsieh, Kara Isabella, Amer Jandali, Maia Kaufman, Claire Kim, Margarita Korol, Caroline McAndrews, Rodrigo Munoz, Hannah Phang, David Rojas, Yena Seo, Rinat Sherzer, Bruno Silva, Nelson Tseng and Alex Wu.

For this exhibition, students are tasked with imagining tools that can solve social problems. “Imagine if we had a screwdriver that could turn back the effects of climate change, a wrench for squeezing wars to a close or a level for leveling social injustice,” suggests Cheryl Heller, chair of MFA Design for Social Innovation.

MFA Design for Social Innovation at SVA is the first MFA program in the rapidly growing field of social-impact design. It was created for designers who want to work at a strategic level within business, government and the social sector to solve the major challenges humanity faces, and to offer non-designers an opportunity to use design to create positive impact.
