School of Visual Arts (SVA) presents “Grasping Shards,” a juried exhibition of works by SVA students. Organized by SVA Galleries, “Grasping Shards” is on view Saturday, May 7 through Friday May 27, 2022 at the SVA Flatiron Gallery, 141 West 21st Street, New York City. A statement from the Galleries about the exhibition reads:
“We live in a stream of information that rushes by on all sides. As it does, images fragment and lines blur, torn by the current. We catch glimpses, but never the whole picture. The artists in ‘Grasping Shards’ examine these fragments and their influence on us. They hold these shards, feeling the sharp edges and voids, looking for answers. Their works mend these fragments, repairing our relationship to our desires, memories and identities.”
Working in painting, photography, sculpture and installation, the artists in this exhibition include Kasey Baker (BFA Photography and Video), J Dylan (BFA Photography and Video), Jingyao Huang (MFA Fine Arts), Ariana Gaila (BFA Photography and Video), Kostas Lales (MFA Fine Arts), Alex Leav (MFA Photography and Related Media), Heather Link-Bergman (MFA Art Practice) and Sefa Ozdogan (BFA Fine Arts).
Juried exhibitions are a way for SVA students to recognize the achievements of their most distinguished classmates. Artists are selected from a large pool of applicants to the annual SVA Galleries call for entries, whose submissions undergo a rigorous examination of presented materials, including documentation of work and artist statements.
The SVA Flatiron Gallery is open Monday through Saturday, 10:00am–6:00pm. In accordance with SVA COVID-19 protocols, in-person viewing is open to SVA students, faculty and staff. The public may visit by showing proof of full vaccination (including booster, if eligible) and photo ID. All visitors to the Flatiron Gallery must pre-register through an RSVP link no less than 48 hours prior to the selected event date and time. Proper masking is required.
