Exhibition

School of Visual Arts presents “Home Front,” the first of two exhibitions of new work by second-year students in the MFA Fine Arts Department. Curated by MA Curatorial Practice Department Deputy Chair Jovana Stokic, “Home Front” is on view January 18 through February 1 at the SVA Chelsea Gallery, 601 West 26th Street, New York City. Admission is free and open to the public.

Participating artists include Julia Buntaine, Donna Cleary, Elizabeth Cook, George Davis, Nadia Haji Omar, Katrin I. Jonsdottir Hjordisardottir, Rachel K. Jantzi, Jee Hee Kang, Shinyoung Kim, Yeonji Kim, Andrea McGinty, Jon Sedor and Art Vidrine. 

Stokic explains, “My curatorial concept for this exhibition invokes the irrefutably pacifistic notion of the home front. It alludes to the notion of claiming one's individuality by peacefully co-existing. The varied practices of these artists explore the possibility of being unique within their own territories while sharing the same space. This analogy goes even further by stressing that, within the realm of art, home fronts become spaces of both exploration and hospitality. In this way, a home front erases any closures. The artists in this exhibition negotiate their readiness to be at home in the gallery and in a wide variety of media and representational strategies.” 

The MFA Fine Arts Department reflects the diversity of New York’s many art worlds. Together, the faculty and students form a community of established and emerging artists from many backgrounds who work across disciplines and modes of practice. The department’s main goals are to provide a stimulating and supportive environment in which students can thrive and develop as artists, to foster rigorous critical engagement with contemporary art and other cultural forms and to produce an ongoing conversation through work as much as through words about what we make, how we make it and why.
