MPS Digital Photography presents a talk with faculty member Allen Furbeck (MPS 2008 Digital Photography). Furbeck has been a photographer and a painter for over 50 years, working in a number of styles both abstract and representational. He finds the intersections between these different media and styles to be a fertile ground for new ways to be creative. His current work begins with 360-degree spherical photographic captures, which he transforms digitally into panoramic photos using various geometric projections. The resulting photos exemplify the ways in which perception and perspective are subjectively and neurologically complex as well as contingent. His explorations of time, space, color and light lead to images that can feel contemplative, immersive, ungrounding, exhilarating, even hallucinogenic.

He is a graduate of SVA’s digital photography program, and has worked for the program for since 2010. He has been an editor of course materials, a part-time instructor, and the program’s print studio manager, helping students hone their final prints for their thesis exhibitions.

His most recent exhibition was at the Master Gallery on New York’s Upper West Side. His paintings and photographs have appeared in numerous group and solo shows in New York, Paris, Geneva, and elsewhere. He is currently working on a book of his recent photographic work.

Starting in 2011 and after over 200 lectures, the i3: Images, Ideas, Inspiration Lecture series continues to feature leading photographers, artists, editors, gallerists and industry experts. The fall 2024 i3 Lecture season is curated and hosted by MPS Digital Photography faculty member Julie Grahame. Most past lectures are available on YouTube and Vimeo.
