School of Visual Arts (SVA) presents “Iridescent Perception,” a juried exhibition of multidisciplinary work by SVA students. Organized by SVA Galleries, the exhibition will be on view from Saturday, April 9 through Saturday, April 25, 2022, at the SVA Flatiron Windows, 141 West 21st Street, New York City.
The artwork in “Iridescent Perception” explores the human experience as perceived through the body and mind. Using painting, drawing and mixed media, the artists come together to create a contemplative reflection of the psyche. The interpersonal connection between artist and observer allows viewers to recognize themselves in the transcendental environments that these artists create. Chu Cheng (BFA Illustration) transcends time through dreamlike sequences, examining past and future selves. C Fodoreanu (MFA Art Practice) “beautifies” parts of the human body deemed grotesque by society through visual strategies typically used to censor images. Giorgi Shalikashvili (MFA Fine Arts) explores the illusion of tangible reality by focusing on the material qualities of printed images, revealing unexpected colors and patterns that support these optical structures. Mary Lindstrom (BFA Computer Art, Computer Animation and Visual Effects) contrasts mundane moments of everyday life with surreal expressions that lead the viewer to question how their own essence influences and alters their environment.
Juried exhibitions are a way for SVA students to recognize the achievements of their most distinguished classmates. Artists are selected from a large pool of applicants to the annual SVA Galleries call for entries, whose submissions undergo a rigorous examination of presented materials, including documentation of work and artist statements.
The SVA Flatiron Windows is open Monday through Saturday, 10:00am–6:00pm. In accordance with SVA COVID-19 protocols, in-person viewing is open to SVA students, faculty and staff. SVA Flatiron Windows is viewable from the sidewalk and accessible by wheelchair. Proper masking is required.
