MFA Fine Arts presents a talk by the artist Julie Schenkelberg (MFA 2011 Fine Arts).


Julie Schenkelberg lives and works in Cleveland, Ohio. Her practice is nomadic and she frequently relocates for months at a time, throughout places such as Detroit, Pittsburgh, New York City, Italy, Norway, and more. She creates sculpture and large-scale installations using discarded domestic and industrial materials. Her installations have been displayed at the Mattress Factory Museum, the Museum of Art and Design, NYC, UNTITLED Miami, The Sculpture Center, and more. Schenkelberg received a BA in art history at the College of Wooster, OH, and MFA at the School of Visual Arts. Her work is influenced by her eighteen years of professional experience of working in the theater in New York City and elsewhere. She is represented by Asya Geisberg Gallery, located in Tribeca in Manhattan, NY, and Materia Gallery in Detroit, MI, as well as Abattoir Gallery in Cleveland, OH. She has received four National Endowment for the Arts Grants for her work, the Efroymson Contemporary Arts Fellowship, and a Harpo Foundation Grant. She has been awarded many residencies including Yaddo, Red Bull Arts in Detroit, The BemisCenter for Contemporary Arts, Art Omi, and Projekstom Normanns, Norway. Press includes Artforum, The New Yorker, PBS, Bloomberg, Hyperallergic, The Brooklyn Rail, Art F City, The Huffington Post, Beautiful Decay and Ground Magazine. She teaches at The Cleveland Institute of Art, The University of Akron. She is currently the 2024-2026 Engaged Artist in Residence at the Arts and Humanities Council Indiana University, Bloomington, IN . She is an active board member of The Sculpture Center in Cleveland, Ohio and is dedicated to helping emerging artists. Julie is also a tarot reader.


Talks is a series of lectures by artists, writers and critics presented by MFA Fine Arts. Talks are held on Tuesdays at 3:00pm at 133 West 21st Street in Room 101C and on Zoom. Participation in the Q&A is limited to MFA Fine Arts students attending the lecture in person.
