School of Visual Arts (SVA) presents “Material Mythologies,” an exhibition of drawing, painting, photography and sculpture by 12 students. The exhibition will be on view from Wednesday, February 22, through Monday, March 13, at the SVA Gramercy Gallery, 209 East 23^rd Street, New York City.

Mythologies have served as a means for people to shape their understanding of life and its mysteries since the first person applied pigment to the wall of a darkened cave millennia ago. A myth, at its core, is a belief in the intangible. Peering through the cracks of perception, the artists in “Material Mythologies” conjure tactile objects from an immaterial, unknown world to explore symbolism, fantasy and the inner self. Through their work, these artists demonstrate the power and the necessity of imagination in bringing meaning to the world around them.

Artists featured in this exhibition are Yuli Aloni Primor (MFA 2023 Fine Arts), Shibo Chan (BFA 2023 Photography and Video), Kaiyu Dong (BFA 2025 Photography and Video), Jingyi Gao (MFA 2023 Photography, Video and Related Media), Kate Gu (BFA 2022 Fine Arts), Jingyao Huang (MFA 2023 Fine Arts), Polin Huang (MFA 2023 Fine Arts), Ruoshui Liu (BFA 2023 Illustration), Andy Maticorena Kajie (BFA 2023 Photography and Video), Xiaoyan Sun (BFA 2025 Illustration), Celia Tang (BFA 2024 Illustration) and Ying Wang (BFA 2024 Illustration).

Juried exhibitions are a way for SVA students to recognize the achievements of their most distinguished classmates. Artists are selected from a large pool of applicants to the annual SVA Galleries call for entries, whose submissions undergo a rigorous examination of presented materials, including documentation of work and artist statements.
