School of Visual Arts (SVA) presents “New Artifacts,” an exhibition of multimedia work by seven SVA students selected by a jury of their peers. “New Artifacts” is on view from Friday, May 12, through Thursday, May 25, at the SVA Flatiron Gallery, 141/133 West 21st Street, New York City.
An artifact can be many things, such as a tool, decoration, or even a defect in an image rendered by technology. Often associated with the past, the artifact is a marker or remnant of something prior. The artists in “New Artifacts” remind viewers that the concept of an artifact is not only important when substantiating a past, but also when considering alternate futures in the present. Performing a sort of personal archeology, the artists excavate memory and manifest the intangible through their artistic practices, giving presence to a relic that may otherwise go unseen.
Artists featured in this exhibition are Janine Brown (MFA 2023 Art Practice), Helia Chitsazan (MFA 2023 Fine Arts), Amber Dacanay (BFA 2026 Fine Arts), Andrea Diaz (BFA 2024 Fine Arts), Mingyi Gan (BFA 2025 Illustration), Basharat Ali Syed (BFA 2023 Fine Art) and Zoe Toscano (MFA 2024 Fine Arts).
Juried exhibitions are a way for SVA students to recognize the achievements of their most distinguished classmates. Artists are selected from a large pool of applicants to the annual SVA Galleries call for entries, whose submissions undergo a rigorous examination of presented materials, including documentation of work and artist statements.
