School of Visual Arts presents “Hopping the Fence,” an exhibition of works by SVA students selected by a jury of their peers. Organized by SVA Galleries, the exhibition is on view Saturday, April 20, through Saturday, May 5, at the SVA Gramercy Gallery, 209 East 23rd Street, New York City.

“Hopping the Fence” features work that is inspired by the way people view and interact with their environment. Each of the artists’ chosen subject matter gives viewers access to these topics of psychological, geographical and social ideology, leading to reflection on how we connect with the spaces in which we live. Works include illustrations, paintings, photographs and sculpture.

Emily Klass (MFA Art Practice) creates paintings by juxtaposing her idealized memories of Western landscapes with current anxieties over environmental concerns.

Jieun Kim’s (MFA Fine Arts) drawings and paintings focus on modern people who live busy lives, highlighting the passing of time. Their series, “Shall We Dance,” speaks of the importance of relationships between people, dancing in harmony.

Candice Kwan (MFA Photography, Video and Related Media) suspends time through long exposure photographs that are meant to evoke a particular psychological and emotional resonance while refusing to provide detailed specificity or literal clarity, inspired by the artist’s experience with antepartum.

Jonathan Ellis (MFA Photography, Video and Related Media) creates images of locations that are categorized by various demographics or political characteristics showing where political power comes from.

Zitong Zhu (MFA Fine Arts) uses images to build relationships between the environments depicted in their photographs and viewers looking at them.

Robert Burch’s (BFA Design) sculptures explore patterns in nature within studies of contrasting materials not normally associated with one another.

Alex Angel (BFA Design) explores brilliant, pure and raw experiences about love, reality and the subconscious mind through their complex ink illustrations.

Ishita Jain (MFA Illustration as Visual Essay) remembers the world around her through her sketches and drawings of the places she visits. She never leaves home without a sketchbook; it is her motivation to see more of the world, to document the fleeting feeling of what a space can make one feel and to preserve impulsive moments.

Make Wen (BFA Illustration) creates drawings about people eating alone in neighborhoods around SVA.

Juried exhibitions are a way for SVA’s student body to recognize the achievements of their most distinguished classmates. Artists are selected from a large pool of applicants to the annual SVA Galleries call for entries, whose submissions undergo a rigorous examination of presented materials, including documentation of work and artist statements.
