School of Visual Arts (SVA) presents “Layers of Our Visible Past,” an exhibition of artwork by MA/MAT Art Education students, curated by department chair Catherine Rosamond. The exhibition will be on view from Friday, June 17, through Saturday, July 2, at the SVA Flatiron Gallery, 133/141 West 21st Street, New York City.
The past itself, as historical change continues to accelerate, has become the most surreal of subjects - making it possible... to see a new beauty in what is vanishing.
—Susan Sontag
“Layers of our Visible Past” features collaborative and individual works by five women artist-educators and 2022 MA/MAT Art Education graduates. Through their paintings, collages, sculptures, textiles and installations, they contemplate not only their layered stories, but also pay homage to important women from the past and present who have paved the way for them to be informed educators. The world is fraught with heartbreaking problems, and many women, especially those who are marginalized based on their race, disabilities, gender identity and personal choices, need to be supported. As artists and educators, the five women take on the challenge to make the world a more equitable place by amplifying their voices, teaching others, and reminding themselves to always “See more, Hear more, and to Feel more” (Sontag, 1966).
Participating artists include Lisa Gonzalez, Yan Gabriella Peropat, Sophia Santella, Alejandra Mejía Torres and Chelsea Warlick.
