MFA Fine Arts presents a talk by Lizania Cruz.


Lizania Cruz (she/her) is a Dominican participatory artist and designer interested in how migration affects ways of being and belonging. Through research, oral history and audience participation, she creates projects that highlight a pluralistic narrative on migration. Cruz has been part of multiple artist-in-residence and fellowships. Some notable ones are the Laundromat Project Create Change (2017-2019); IdeasCity:New Museum (2019); Robert Blackburn Workshop Studio Immersion Project (SIP) (2019); BRIClab: Contemporary Art (2020-2021); Jerome Hill Artist Fellow, Visual Arts (2021-2022); and International Studio & Curatorial Program, ISCP (2022).


She has presented solo shows at A.I.R. Gallery, CUE Art Foundation, International Studio and Curatorial Program, ISCP, and Alma Lewis as well as multiple group exhibitions. In 2021 she was part of “ESTAMOS BIEN: LA TRIENAL 20/21” at el Museo del Barrio, the first national survey of Latinx artists by the institution. Most recently, she was part of “52 Artists: A Feminist Milestone” at the Aldrich Museum.

Lizania Cruz es una artista participativa y diseñadora dominicana interesada en cómo la migración afecta las formas de ser y pertenecer. A través de la investigación, la historia oral y la participación de la audiencia, crea proyectos que destacan una narrativa pluralista sobre la migración. Cruz ha sido artista en residencia y fellow en El Laundromat Project Create Change (2018-2019), Agora Collective Berlin (2018), Design Trust for Public Space (2018), Recess Session (2019), A.I.R. Cruz ha presentado exposiciones individuales en A.I.R. Gallery, Fundación de Arte CUE, International Studio & Curatorial Program (ISCP), y Alma Lewis. Su trabajo ha sido exhibido en la Primera Bienal de Diseño de Sharjah, Untitled, Art Miami Beach, The Highline, Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts, entre otras instituciones. En 2021 formó parte de ESTAMOS BIEN: LA TRIENAL 20/21 en el Museo del Barrio, la primera encuesta nacional de artistas latinx realizada por la institución. Recientemente formo parte de la exhibición 52 Artists: A Feminist Milestone en el Museo Aldrich. Además, sus obras de arte e instalaciones han aparecido en Hyperallergic, Fuse News, KQED arts, Dazed Magazine, Garage Magazine y el New York Times.


Talks is a series of lectures by artists, writers and critics presented by MFA Fine Arts. Talks are held on Tuesdays at 3:00pm at 133 West 21st Street in Room 101C and on Zoom. Participation in the Q&A is limited to MFA Fine Arts students attending the lecture in person.
