“Enfolding and Unfolding: Geometric Abstraction in Motion” explores the ways in which arabesque art and Islamic geometric art have influenced contemporary Arab artists, particularly those engaged with architectural concerns. These contemporary artists have incorporated elements from geometric Islamic art, transforming them through their own visual language. Full press release can be seen here.

The exhibition “Form of Touch” considers the fusion of contemporary art and craft, paying close attention to the phenomenological concerns and physical impact of this work. Artists Cynthia Alberto, Colette Aliman, Yasunari Izaki, Elizabeth Jaeger, Leeza Meksin, Courtney Puckett, Brie Ruais and Martha Tuttle all utilize materials, such as clay and fiber, that render a sense of aliveness. The focus of the exhibition will be notions of “alien-ness”—particularly pressing today—and how that can be made manifest through various subjectivities via live performance. These different investigations of the alien come into play through fictive narratives, psychological alienation, as well as Brechtian notions surrounding the critical space between audience and performer that disturb, disrupt or alienate. The exhibition “Life in the Conditional” is predicated on the theory proposed by the anthropologist Victor Turner concerning liminality and ritual forms and how this can serve as a lens to analyze our current sociopolitical condition. Currently, there is a complete dissolution of order, and fact and fiction have bled into each other. Full press release can be seen here.

“The Map Is Not the Territory” is an exhibition examining the construction of representation through socially and lawfully imposed, arbitrary boundaries. Drawn from Polish-American philosopher and linguist Alfred Korzybski’s publication Science and Sanity, the show upholds the spirit of resistance against misrepresentation. Presented by first-year MA Curatorial Practice fellows.

“Sexual Fragments Absent” features the work of three black women—Doreen Garner, Shawné Michaelain Holloway and Tiona McClodden—whose artistic practices are invested in the politics of race, sex and affect within BDSM (bondage and discipline, dominance and submission, sadism and masochism). Unpacking this entangled sociopolitical web of BDSM begins for these artists with the affective reverb between pleasure and pain, present and past. Full press release can be seen here.
