School of Visual Arts presents “Power of Ten: Narratives on Self-Awareness,” an exhibition of artworks by MAT Art Education students. Curated by the program chair, Catherine Rosamond, Ed.D., the exhibition will be on view from Friday, June 14, through Wednesday, July 3, at the SVA Flatiron Gallery, 133/141 West 21st Street, New York City.
“When sharing narratives about ourselves, we make deliberate choices to convey our intended meaning. We may choose to embellish or omit important details, or we may change the sequence of events intentionally or unconsciously to accentuate certain points. Much like art materials and processes, personal narratives give us the power and imagination to overlap, cut out, mush and collage together sequences of events, thoughts and histories.
“In this exhibition, 10 artist-educators contemplate their narratives on self-awareness as they embark on new chapters in their lives as teachers. American educational reformer John Dewey expressed in his book How We Think that we do not learn from experience, but rather from reflecting on experience. Self-awareness is a process that often takes place at different periods and in various degrees. It is also strongly tied to lifelong learning and growth. However, as they become role models who influence the artistic lives of youths, these 10 artist-teachers are pushed to reflect on who they are, where they come from and where they want to go in a short span of time.
“In each of the works presented here, meanings and interpretations of memories, imagination and belief systems have been picked apart, and then woven into tapestries to make new meanings. Collectively, these narratives create a community of voices that positively reverberate as the ‘Power of Ten.’”
