LaTonia Allen’s painting takes on the scale of grand portraiture and asks ‘what is the space that is black and that is woman?’ She has created a monumental and complex tableau with self-portraiture and related aspects of her black identity and history. A projected video of the artist performing layers on top of the canvas creating a palimpsest of time and narratives.
