MFA Illustration as Visual Essay Exhibition
School of Visual Arts presents “Class of 2019 Thesis Projects,” an exhibition of work by the graduating class of MFA Illustration as Visual Essay. Curated by thesis coordinator David Sandlin, the exhibition will be on view Saturday, April 27, through Thursday, May 16, at the SVA Chelsea Gallery, 601 West 26th Street, 15th floor New York City.
The work displayed in this exhibition is the result of intensive, yearlong thesis projects. Each student worked individually with a thesis advisor and also attended a workshop class run by Sandlin. Some of the notable thesis advisors this year were Paul Buckley, Guy Billout, Roz Chast, Seymour Chwast, Josh Cochran, Henrik Drescher, Tomer Hanuka, Frances Jetter, Rebecca Mock, Tim O’Brien, Brian Rea and Jillian Tamaki.
Illustration is the visual communication of ideas and perception, and the MFA Illustration as Visual Essay class of 2019 ably demonstrates this notion. Wit, emotion and sumptuous color and style mark this year’s exhibition, with content ranging from memoir and personal revelation, to quirky, aphoristic musings on the meaning of childhood, to colorful, abstract interpretations of sound. Fanciful, uniquely rendered narratives tell the tales of lonely turtles, painfully shy young girls and insomniac towns. Universal themes—coming of age, finding love, the quest for meaning and identity—are given fresh treatments by these gifted artists, demonstrating that the human condition remains a vigorous subject for original visual exploration.
Presenting work by Marc Aquino-Michaels, Revati Bose, Miranda Bruce, Nan Cao, Ellen Dubreuil, Liam Eisenberg, Sahar Ghanbari, Juliet Goodman, Yiheng Lou, Courtney Menard, Mari Gabi Messina, Vidhya Nagarajan, Christina Rycz, Mojo Wang, Chenlu Wei, Matt Williams, Meijia Xu, Benjamin Yu and Yihui Yuan.
School of Visual Arts’ MFA in Illustration as Visual Essay is designed to maximize students’ opportunities as figurative artists, from the conventional gallery wall to the full range of 21st-century media. The program fuses the development of creative thinking with technical and communication skills. Additional focus is placed on best practices in navigating the visual art marketplace while empowering students to choose making art as a way of life.
