School of Visual Arts (SVA) presents “rupture & repair,” an exhibition of multimedia artworks by MPS Art Therapy students, collaborators from their internship sites and community members. Curated by Liz DelliCarpini, department internship coordinator and adjunct faculty member, the exhibition will be on view from Wednesday, February 22 through Monday, March 13, at the Flatiron Gallery, 141 West 21st Street, New York, NY 10011.

The artists seek to rupture and repair by breaking down internal and external barriers to empathy and being. Public participation is an essential component of this community art therapy practice: opening opportunities to break cycles of trauma, break open assumptions and create spaces to be. The therapeutic goals of “rupture & repair” are to bring people together in ways that acknowledge and respect their differences.

Institutional partners include Heartshare, Counseling in Schools, NYU Langone, Mt. Sinai Kravis Children's Hospital, MercyFirst, The Art Therapy Project and Bellevue Hospital.

MPS Art Therapy is an immersive two-year, 60-credit program that prepares students to become licensed, credentialed art therapists. It integrates the experiential components of art therapy within a comprehensive framework of academic theory, clinical application via an internship program, and art practice. Students learn to adapt the creative process to the specific therapeutic needs of the individual, population and setting, with a consideration of how systems of theoretical and social constructs impact treatment. SVA believes in active engagement with the community at large, which allows for utilization of the diverse, innovative, creative atmosphere of New York City and beyond to enhance training.
