Exhibition

School of Visual Arts presents “No Simple Highways,” an exhibition of works by SVA students selected by a jury of their peers. Organized by SVA Galleries, “No Simple Highways” is on view Saturday, September 16, through Saturday, October 7, at the SVA Gramercy Gallery, 209 East 23rd Street, New York City.

Participating artists include Ken Boylan, William Fineberg, Jason Isolini, Redact3d, Seungho Lee, Pedro Mesa, Po-Yen Wang, Zhi Xuan Zhang and Confei Zou.

“No Simple Highways” explores how spaces, whether naturally occurring or architectural, shape the human experience, both physically and conceptually. Works on view include photographs, paintings and digital mixed-media sculpture.

Ken Boylan (BFA Film) searches for emotion in images of the natural world. His photographs explore how nature is a physical and spiritual necessity.

The manipulated and decontextualized photographs of William Fineberg (BFA Photography and Video) turn “real world” elements into surreal compositions. The images explore architectural forms and human experience by focusing on precision and balance.

The photographic and video work of Jason Isolini (BFA Photography and Video) questions the relationship between physical and digital space.

Abstract photographic compositions by Redact3d (BFA Photography and Video) are inspired by the idea of hallucinations and alternate realities.

Seungho Lee’s (BFA Fine Arts) paintings embody subjective impressions of the artist’s first-hand experience through the fluidity of paint and attention to color.

Pedro Mesa’s (MFA Fine Arts) paintings draw inspiration from Colombian architecture and minimalist sculpture.

Poyen Wang’s (MFA Computer Art) mixed-media works stem from the connection of personal and collective memories. “Route of Obsession” visually documents his curiosity of strangers he’s encountered on NYC subway platforms.

Zhi Xuan Zhang (BFA Photography and Video) presents photographs of Shanghai that address ideas of displacement, cultural belonging and the erasure of history in a rapidly transforming city.

Congfei Zou (BFA Design) uses color as a means of expression in his photographs of found environments.

Juried exhibitions are a way for SVA’s student body to recognize the achievements of their most distinguished classmates. Artists are selected from a large pool of applicants to the annual SVA Galleries call for entries, whose submissions undergo a rigorous examination of presented materials, including documentation of work and artist statements.
