Exhibition

School of Visual Arts presents "PhotoGlobal 2007 – 2014," an exhibition of work by 12 artists from the PhotoGlobal program, a one-year residency for emerging photographers from around the world, which ran from 2007 to 2014. Curated by BFA Photography and MFA Photography, Video and Related Media faculty member Lyle Rexer, the exhibition is on view November 22 through December 16 at the SVA Gramercy Gallery, 209 East 23rd Street, New York City. Admission is free and open to the public.

Participating artists include Jean Bettingen, Vincent Bezuidenhout, Nima Chaichi, Emmeline De Mooij, Shuruq Harb, Matthieu Lavanchy, Charlotte de Mezamat, Andrew Moynehan, Anna Orlowska, Keren Shavit, Quentin Shih, and Saana Wang.

Acoording to BFA Photography chair and PhotoGlobal founder Stephen Frailey, "PhotoGlobal was conceived on a piece of hotel stationary on a flight from Tokyo in 2006. Its purpose–to share the extraordinary resources of SVA's BFA Photography Department and enhance our understanding of a broader range of photographic practice from around the world–has created a lively and vivid discourse within an academic matrix. As the young throughout the world increasingly strive to assert a complex cultural identity on their own terms it is important to utilize photography's ability to observe, interpret and assist in articulating a cultural identity and empowering a new generation of photographers to form their individual voice."

Rexer adds, "While there are stylistic 'schools' of photography, from Helsinki to Dusseldorf to Yale, the constant exchange of images, their widespread distribution in digital space and the many alternatives to physical display have all militated increasingly against 'local' idioms and influences. In an important sense, SVA has been ahead of that trend because it has never enforced or encouraged a particular approach to photography. That diversity is a hallmark of contemporary practice around the world. More or less conventional documentary approaches, fashion-inflicted staging, polygot installation, collage and other strategies animate the work in this exhibition."

SVA BFA Photography students immerse themselves in all apsects of commercial and fine art photography, gaining a better understanding of various genres, ideas and vocabularies. With access to cutting-edge facilities–as well as a 100-plus faculty of photographers, museum directors, critics, art directors, photo editors and photography collectors–they are able to hone their craft and cultivate their own sensibility and visual style.
