Sam Lubell: The Making of "Never Built"

MA Design Research, Writing and Criticism presents author Sam Lubell, who will share the secrets of creating the books Never Built Los Angeles and Never Built New York. From their inception, these projects presented unique challenges, from finding projects that had been lost to history, to wading through dozens of archives around the country. Lubell will take the audience through the process, from early digging, to writing, to production, to publicity. He’ll also touch on what was a completely new challenge: working with designers to create exhibitions that would bring the books to life.
Sam Lubell, co-author of Never Built New York (Metropolis Books, 2016), is a staff writer at Wired and a contributing editor at The Architect’s Newspaper. He has written seven books about architecture for The Monacelli Press, Rizzoli, Metropolis Books, and Phaidon. He also writes for The New York Times, The Los Angeles Times, Los Angeles Magazine, Architect, Architectural Record, Architectural Review, Wallpaper, Contract, and other publications. He co-curated the A+D Architecture and Design Museum exhibitions "Never Built Los Angeles" and "Shelter: Rethinking How We Live in Los Angeles." His upcoming exhibition, "Never Built New York," will open at the Queens Museum this September.
