Graphic for Self/Centered: MA Design Research, Writing and Criticism Class of 2021 Thesis Presentations

“Self/Centered” presents the independent thesis work of the nine outstanding graduates of the MA Design Research, Writing and Criticism class of 2021, who find common ground in their rigorous explorations of the self in relation to design, engaging subjects that span media, language, citizenship, accessibility, gender and race.

Far from selfish, to center oneself is to understand that in the liminal space between “me” and “we,” exists a spectrum of clashing and complementing identities. In acknowledging this tension—between individual/collective, between micro/macro, between subject/object—the work of the class of 2021 unearths larger questions about the world we share and the agency found through claiming the center.
