Stickers and Society with Carlo McCormick
BFA Visual & Critical Studies and the SVA Honors Program present Stickers and Society: A Conversation Between DB Burkeman and Carlo McCormick. Stickers give a voice to those without. Accessible and affordable, this art form is endlessly mutable and ephemeral. They’re the perfect lens for a wider audience to explore a vast scope of unfiltered culture. Unlike work protected in a gallery and recreated on the internet which is memorialized and searchable forever, stickers often last only as long as their adhesive backing and resilience to the elements. Hiding in plain sight, stickers deserve serious review. Therefore, there will be a conversation between two NYC luminaries: the first being DB Burkeman—FKA DJ DB, author of two sticker history books, infamous rave and jungle DJ, art curator and collector and participant in some of the most significant movements in the past half-century counter-culture. Burkeman cheekily credits himself as knowing “more about stickers than anyone on the planet” and will be joined by Carlo McCormick, cultural critic, former senior editor of PAPER magazine, longtime museum curator for all things pop culture and superstar in the downtown NYC art scene. The duo will offer their expertise and experience in a Q&A panel. This event is hosted in conjunction with “A Sticker History Exhibition,” running August 29 – September 29 at the Flatiron Project Space, which presents a collection that spans over 100 years, giving this medium and its creators the permanence and prominence they deserve. For the art world and beyond, “A Sticker History Exhibition” opens a direct window into the subversive counter-culture movements and commercial influences from which these adhesive works of art were born. Some notable names in the exhibition include Andy Warhol, BANKSY, Barney Bubbles, Barry McGee – TWIST, BÄST, Beastie Boys, Buzzcocks, Daft Punk, Damien Hirst, Designers Republic/Warp Records, Ed Templeton, Erik Foss, FAILE, FUTURA 2000, Gorillaz/Jamie Hewlett, HAZE, INVADER, Jamie Reid, Jenny Holzer, Keith Haring, Kenny Scharf, Kenzo Minami, Lady AIKO, Lawrence Weiner, Malcolm McLaren, Margaret Kilgallen, Mark McKee, Marilyn Minter, Mark Gonzales, Matthew Barney, Mike Kelley/Jim Shaw/Destroy All Monsters, Peter Saville/Factory Records, Ramones, Raymond Pettibon, Ron English, Sex Pistols, Shepard Fairey, Sean Cliver, Sonic Youth, Steven Powers - ESPO, STIKMAN, SWOON, Takashi Murakami, The Rolling Stones, Velvet Underground, The White Stripes, Todd James/REAS, Tom Sachs, Yoshitomo Nara and many more.
