MFA Visual Narrative and SVA Library present a talk by narrative artist and MFA Computer Arts faculty member John Benton. This talk will explore the rapidly transforming media landscape and uses of narrative. As delivery methods become more physical, we receive information very deeply. While VR and AR may seem rather silly, what they point to is serious; we're hacking the brain. Benton would argue that stories have always done this, but that learning the new methods and systems can help you discover the secrets of storytelling. John Benton is a narrative artist working with haptic and immersive environments. In the last few years, his interactive books have won the Tribeca Film Festival's mobile storytelling prize (2015), London's PttP Market Prize (2015), and he has received grants from the NY Media Lab (2016) and the New York Media Center (2016/2017) for work with AR and VR. Most recently he has been developing PRGRM with the New York Foundation or the Arts. He teaches ﬁlm, emerging technology and game design at New York University and the School of Visual Arts, as well as the International Center of Photography. He regularly lectures and speaks on the future of storytelling.
