TOP AWARD GIVEN TO GRAPHIC DESIGNER, MASSIMO VIGNELLI - HONOR PRESENT BY THE SCHOOL OF VISUAL ARTS, NYC
SCHOOL OF VISUAL ARTS has chosen New York graphic designer, MASSIMO VIGNELLI, as the recipient of its 1991 Masters Series Award.
The Italian-born Vignelli, who was a recipient of the first Presidential Design Award in 1985 from President Ronald Reagan, is the third winner of the SVA Masters Series. Paul Rand and Milton Glaser are the previous honorees. Vignelli founded Vignelli Designs in New York in 1971. The company is known for the design of corporate identity and graphic programs, transportation graphics, exhibitions, interiors and furniture. Vignelli will be honored at a reception Feb. 21 at the Visual Arts Museum in the School's main building at 209 East 23rd Street, where a retrospective of Vignelli's work will be shown from Feb. 22 to March 8.
Vignelli, who studied architecture in Milan and Venice, entered the Art Directors Hall of Fame in 1982 and is a past president of both the American Institute of Graphic Arts and the Alliance Graphique Internationale. His creations have entered the permanent collections of several museums-notably the Museum of Modern Art, the Cooper-Hewitt, and Die Neue Sammlung in Munich.
