Graphic Designer Paul Davis with Masters Series Award and Retrospective October 5 to October 30, 1998.Renowned graphic artist Paul Davis, a School of Visual Arts alumnus and faculty member, is the 12th recipient of the School of Visual Arts’ coveted Masters Series Award. The School of Visual Arts annually presents the award to a visual communicator who has created a significant body of work in his or her field. As part of the award, SVA will display a retrospective of Davis’ work, entitled PAUL DAVIS: THE MASTERS SERIES.Davis has created many memorable images for Broadway and Off-Broadway productions such as Barrymore and the New York Shakespeare Festival’s For Colored Girls..., The Pirates of Penzance, and Hamlet. Davis, art director for the Festival from 1984 to 1991, counts Time Magazine, Rolling Stone, American Museum of the Moving Image, the 92nd Street Y, and The New York Times as clients. The principal of the Paul Davis Studio, he is the winner of the 1997/1998 Prix de Rome (Rome Prize) in the Design Arts. The American Academy in Rome, a center for independent study, research, and creative work in the arts and humanities, bestowed the award to Davis in April 1997.Davis has not only created posters and magazine covers, but he has also created numerous book covers and murals and was selected as a 1997 Apple Master by Apple Computers. Davis was one of ten artists commisioned to participate in "Art Is..," a series of subway and bus shelter posters created for SVA’s 50th Anniversary.
