Pioneering animators and identical twins the Quay Brothers discuss their work following a screening of UN)MISTAKEN HANDS: EX VOTO F.H., a new film completed during their October residency at the Wexner Center for the Arts, and their 2010 film Maska. There will be a Q&A with the artists moderated by Art History, MFA Art Practice and MFA Computer Art faculty member Thyrza Nichols Goodeve.

Best known for their stop-motion animated films The Cabinet of Jan Svankmeyer (1984), Street of Crocodiles (1986), In Absentia (2000) and their feature film Institute Benjamenta (1995), the Quay Brothers have produced a diverse body of work in illustration and the graphic arts, set design for opera, dance, theater, commercials, music videos and sculpture, much of which was exhibited during their exhibition and film retrospective at MoMA in 2011-12.

UN)MISTAKEN HANDS: EX VOTO F.H. is a stop-motion puppet film based on the short stories of the unacknowledged “father of magic realism,” Uruguayan author, Felisberto Hernández. The Quays’ film explores the inner worlds created by this “South American Bruno Schulz” and serves as an “ex-voto portrait” of the writer who Gabriel Garcia Márquez claimed taught that "the most haunting mysteries are those of everyday life.” Although his work was championed by Jorge Luis Borges, Julio Cortazar and Italo Calvino, Felisberto Hernández still remains an obscurity in world literature. UN)MISTAKEN HANDS: EX VOTO F.H. continues the Quays' uncanny cohabitation with beloved literary texts.

Maska is an adaptation of Polish writer Stanislaw Lem's 1974 story of the same title and the third production where the Quay Brothers draw inspiration from Polish writers and thinkers.
