Event
Trauma, Home and DEI

ONLINE
Register HereSVA’s inaugural director of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI), Dr. Jarvis Watson, will host a virtual, interactive event discussing trauma, home and DEI work in context to SVA community artwork from the Photoville exhibition “These Years.”
Last year the nation experienced an unprecedented time for racial inequity and social injustice. Disparities that included (but are not limited to) race/ethnicity, gender, national origin and differing abilities were illuminated for what already existed in historically underserved and underrepresented communities. BIPOC, AAPI, LGBTQIA+ and other historically marginalized communities tapped into a generational resilience that has and continues to be utilized toward healing the pain associated with police brutality, hate crimes and our shared losses associated with COVID-19. These experiences have taken a toll on the mental, emotional and spiritual health of SVA community members. This workshop will focus on the systemic nature of the trauma, how SVA community members are coping and how SVA can heal as a community.
“These Years” features faculty, students, alumni and friends whose artwork addresses the global events of the last five years. This exhibition was created as a part of the fifth anniversary of SVACE’s annual Art & Activism events series, in collaboration with Photoville and United Photo Industries. The banner will be on view in Brooklyn Bridge Park through Wednesday, December 1. You can view the SVA Continuing Education exhibition page and banner location here.
