School of Visual Arts (SVA) presents “We Made This,” an exhibition of works by nine graduates of the MFA Visual Narrative class of 2023, curated by Anelisa Garfunkel and Christina Roussos. The exhibition will be on view from Thursday, July 13 through Tuesday, July 25, at the Gramercy Gallery, 209 East 23rd Street, New York City.
Artists featured in this exhibition include Justin Altman, Sydney Chavan, Basya Goldstein, Sean Mac, Erin Casey McNichol, Rafael Pearl, Mariah Plakas, Amos Stillwell and Rose Vincelli Gustine.
The connection that this group of artists has is palpable in their work. Friendship and community are common themes as they sail the high seas, watch aliens overcome alienation, find purpose, community and humor. Their work explores other lands and alternate realities through a range of mediums from comics to animation, documentary and picture books.
The ninth graduating class is the perfect way of marking a decade of the MFA Visual Narrative program, not only because of the range of methods and meanings behind their work, but because of the spirit of innovative and personal storytelling at the heart of each piece.
Founded in 2013, MFA Visual Narrative at SVA puts the art and language of storytelling first through a combination of creative writing and development of visual narrative techniques.
The SVA Gramercy Gallery is open Monday through Saturday, 10:00am–6:00pm. Masks are encouraged but not required.
