School of Visual Arts (SVA) presents “Youngstown: An Equivalent,” an exhibition of work by Andrew Carlson (BFA 2011 Photography), the recipient of the 2010 Tierney Fellowship in Photography. The Tierney Fellowship in Photography is given annually to a promising BFA Photography candidate at SVA to encourage a new body of photographic work. 

“Youngstown: An Equivalent” is an exhibition of photographs and video investigating the myth of the great American road trip. A native of Youngstown, Ohio, Carlson now works and lives in New York City. His work deals with compulsion, convention, myth and pragmatism.

Students in the BFA Photography Department are immersed in all aspects of commercial and fine art photography, giving them a better understanding of various genres, ideas and vocabularies. With access to cutting-edge facilities - as well as a 100-plus faculty of photographers, museum directors, critics, art directors, photo editors and photography collectors - students are able to cultivate their own sensibility and visual style.
