This course offers students an opportunity to document and explore New York City; one of the most diverse cities in the world. Basic techniques of location shooting and street portraiture will be explored, including how to approach a subject on the street, how to take a great portrait and lighting tips. The goal is to tell a story of the city, the people, cultures and neighborhoods with portraits and street documentary photography. As a group we will document the diversity of the city as we visit neighborhoods from Chinatown to Harlem, Jackson Heights and Brighton Beach to and the Lower East Side. In class students will learn to edit and sequence their work and ultimately collaborate and produce a zine/newspaper that tells the story of New York City. One session will include a trip to see a street portrait exhibition.
