This course offers students an opportunity to document and explore New York City; one of the most diverse cities in the world. Basic techniques of location shooting and street portraiture will be explored, including how to approach a subject on the street, how to take a great portrait and lighting tips. The goal is to tell a story of the city's people, cultures and neighborhoods with portraits and street documentary photography. As a group we will document the diversity of the city as we visit neighborhoods from Chinatown to Harlem, Jackson Heights to Coney Island and the Lower East Side. Students will learn to edit and sequence their work and ultimately collaborate and produce a zine/newspaper that tells the story of New York City.
Note: Students will be provided with a MetroCard for the duration of the course. Please bring a camera (digital or analog) and a notebook or smartphone to record information on the places we photograph. This course is held on campus and on location.
