Lighting sets the mood of a space-create your own light and set a vibe. This course will explore the design process and technical skills needed to conceptualize and fabricate a custom-designed light. Through research, discussion and hands-on making, students will find sources of inspiration, sketch and make design drawings, and learn the fabrication skills necessary to build a lamp. We will discuss the history of lighting design, light diffusion and wiring. By the end of this course students will have designed and built their own custom lamp. Sessions are held in the Visible Futures Lab, a state-of-the-art rapid prototyping facility.
NOTE: The materials fee covers materials, including wire, soldering tools and an assortment of lighting components. This course is held on campus at SVA.
