Lighting sets the mood of a space-create your own light and set a vibe. This course will explore the design process and technical skills needed to conceptualize and fabricate a custom-designed light. Through research, discussion and hands-on making, students will find sources of inspiration, sketch and make design drawings, and learn the fabrication skills necessary to build a lamp. We will discuss the history of lighting design, light diffusion and wiring. By the end of this course students will have designed and built their own custom lamp.
Note: The materials fee covers materials, including wire, soldering tools and an assortment of lighting components. This course is held on campus at SVA in the Visible Futures Lab, a state-of-the-art rapid prototyping facility and fabrication space.
