This work was made as a direct response to the death of my father in 2019. Using photography as a means of recovery, I photographed my community, the places we inhabit, and how we inhabit them. I began to think about my recent process and prior work, a solitary pursuit of images that actively excluded any semblance of life. This newfound focus reminded me of making images before I thought about making images, an attempt to freely capture everything. Due to this, some of my oldest images were included, highlighting a return to form to when my photographs lacked instruction.
Mentor: Larry Fink, Photographer
Through discussions about blues, harmonica, and the unfortunate fact that I'm from Los Angeles, Larry Fink and I re-edited a seemingly finished body of work to feel more relevant than it did before. Through this process, new elements became apparent and I began to understand that this work will never truly be finished.
