Carlos Rosales-Silva

Creating highly-colored environments and indexes with abstract paintings, Carlos Rosales-Silva’s works are based on material and experiential knowledge of his LatinX context, and the idea of ‘Brownness’ that has underlined much of his writing. His shaped canvases bring flat, saturated color together with textured processes like ‘stucco’ (used in his family’s building history) alongside references to Indigenous motifs. With a nod to high modernism and formalism, his work subverts the Western stronghold on Abstraction by injecting earlier examples of pre-modern forms such as from Aztec architecture.
