Jee Youn Hwang

Jee Youn Hwang brings together historical ephemera from her family’s history in South Korea as a monument to lost traditions in minimalistic, yet charged ways. An enlarged photograph of her mom and brother as children standing near a controversial location provides an anchor to the installation, which also features a standing display of paper letters. A new video of the artist covered in a plastic sheath elicits an expression of suffering under South Korean’s historically brutal death penalties--and only take on added layers of meaning in this era of Covid and Black Lives Matter.
