Born into a Latin American family in the United States, I was raised in a Catholic state of mind. But while growing up, I began to distance myself from said religion and discover my own sexuality. This ongoing project titled “(DIS)CONNECTED,” is an investigation of my relationship with my family and my sexuality through the use of portraiture and the domestic interior. Since coming out, my relationship with my parents is different, but our love and care for one another is still there.
Since looking through my family’s photo album, the snapshot aesthetic has seeped into my work and I have adapted it into my own style. Through this, I'm attempting to portray my identity through how I feel. It’s as if there is a lack of emotion or a missing puzzle piece that I'm trying to put together with my family as a way to show others that they aren't alone in this journey of self-acceptance.
This helps to further emphasize the work though our family's history and values.
