Walking along the Memorial Wall is a video and sound installation composed from experiences shared online at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall in Washington D.C. Born from the COVID-19 pandemic restrictions on personal movement and travel, the artist spent time on social media sites such as Youtube, Instagram, Yelp, Trip Advisor and Google Maps, from where she collected material to stitch together a repository of experiences that visitors chose to record and upload at the memorial in Washington D.C. The videos are a haptic representation of a virtual walk inside and along the wall, showing the ways visitors engage with it guided by her disembodied arm. The arm simulates scrolling, touching and rubbing in an emotionally charged yet disconnected sphere. The installation amplifies the body’s spectral relationship to Maya Lin’s memorial at a time when engagement is restricted.

A limited run of risograph zines will be available during the exhibition.

About the artist

Rachel Zaretsky is an artist born in Miami and lives in Los Angeles. She holds a BFA in Visual and Critical Studies from The School of Visual Arts (SVA) in New York and is currently an MFA candidate in Art at the USC Roski School of Art and Design. She works through performance, video and photography to challenge our relationship to the creation of collective memory. She studies the compulsion to collect and create archives of digital images and treat them as malleable material for her videos. Through this inquiry-based art practice, Zaretsky examines how modes of representation can portray absence, how we process loss and our desire to preserve through memorialization.

Visiting the Exhibition

Visitors are limited to 4 visitors in the gallery at a time.
Social distancing must be observed at all times.
Mandatory mask must be worn over the nose and mouth at all times. No neck gaiters, open-chin triangle bandanas, or face coverings with valves, mesh, or holes. This is required for all visitors over age 2 and all staff and artist.
Observe signage and markers throughout the gallery and Avoid Cross Flow of Traffic. Enter and exit through marked designated doors.
Sanitize your hands when entering the space
NO Food or Drink in the Gallery or any indoor space.
Do NOT enter if you or any member of your party have experienced any of the following:
Cough, shortness of breath, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, difficult breathing or shortness of breath, body aches, headache, chills, fatigue, diarrhea, nausea, conjunctivitis, loss of smell and taste in the last 14 days.
If you have been in contact with anyone who has COVID-19 or COVID-19 symptoms during the 14 days prior to your scheduled visit to Mateo, DO NOT VISIT.
If you, yourself has had COVID-19 in the past 10 days.
If you are currently directed by a healthcare provider or public health official to isolate or quarantine due to COVID-19 infection or exposure?
