Childhood Amnesia
December 18, 2024 by Allison Rowell

Under age ten, it’s all two dimensions.

I remember the good, but never the best.

The way that it happened, and never the rest.

The people I met, but never the faces,

The colors and crowds, and never the places.

The loud and the silent, but never the quiet,

The “I know that you’ll like it if you just try it.”

The under my bed and all that it holds,

The monsters and spiders and darkness and cold.

And there underneath I can just barely see

A big gaping hole where a “me” used to be.

I can’t remember the way that I felt

Or what I had felt,

If I had felt it at all.
