Dodi King: Mirror Mirror

Superposition Gallery is pleased to present Dodi King’s first solo exhibition, Mirror Mirror, curated by Storm Ascher. This body of work of large scale oil paintings and drawings follows an expedition into psychic awakening, interlacing themes of multidimensionality and the symbiotic relationship between the cosmic and the terrestrial. King’s works are a form of mythic creation, emanating the wistful existentialism of their inner child. Drawing from memories, dreams and observations, the artist confronts the dichotomy between reality and unreality in our shared perception, encouraging us to uncover the autobiographical nature of imagination.

Ambiguous landscapes envelop the viewer within the realm of the subconscious, where our deepest desires and insights reside. In this liminal space, metaphysicality is expressed through symbolism. King views their practice as the translation of abstract ideas into narrative form. Cyclical paths, fantastical creatures and recurring motifs unravel multiple iterations of a single narrative that can be traced back to King’s personal vision, through which their lived experience is filtered and projected onto canvas and paper.

With an emphasis on spiritual expansion informed by precolonial ideologies, King references our collective capacity for a more holistic recognition of art as living, breathing, autonomous and timeless. Each piece occupies a unified timeline with no defined beginning or ending.

Dodi King (b. 1999, Florida, USA) is a visual artist and writer based in Brooklyn, New York. Recent exhibitions include Get a Load of This!, Daniel Raphael (London, UK); Celebrate Longevity, Superposition (Hamptons, NY); and NADA Miami, Cooper Cole (Toronto, ON).

Superposition Gallery will be open at 526 W 26th St 10th Floor, #1001 from June 22-30. Gallery open hours are 12-4:30pm and a reception for Dodi King on Thursday, June 24 from 6-9pm.
