Terry Smith, the Andrew W. Mellon Professor of Contemporary Art History and Theory in the Department of the History of Art and Architecture at the University of Pittsburgh and professor in the Division of Philosophy, Art and Critical Theory at the European Graduate School, will present “Iconomic Wars,” part of MA Curatorial Practice’s ongoing series, The Public Seminars. For Smith, in our multi-mediated image economy and with tensions of all kinds in society rising exponentially, the question of the “iconomy” is crucial. What does this mean for artists, curators and all of us in making sense of the world and what is to be done?

Join Artist Residency program coordinator Rachel Cohen on a virtual tour of SVA’s Visible Futures Lab. The Visible Futures Lab is a space for learning, prototyping and art-making open to SVA Artist Residency Program participants. Cross-pollination is expected and encouraged here, with projects in fields such as interaction design and fine art developing side by side. The tour will feature Visible Futures Lab director Chester Dols and an artist talk by 2021 Artist Residency alumnus Markus Haala.

Friday, March 11, 6:00 – 7:30pm ET | Feeling and Being Felt With, Adult Version: Embracing Humility, Taming Tyrants and Introducing Daylight Between Fact and Feeling

In this virtual lecture, Renee Obstfeld, Ph.D., LP, NCPsyA, LCAT, will focus on analytic work with adults and the challenges that may confront the therapist in their efforts to feel with patients who are trapped in cycles of self-loathing and shame, who typically respond to an empathic understanding with a negative therapeutic reaction of some kind or another. Such challenges can range from engagement in enactments around power and control to the therapist’s sense that they are fighting for their own psychic survival.

A talk by British-born photographer Janette Beckman, whose career began in the punk-rock era, photographing musicians from The Clash to Boy George, as well as three Police album covers, presented by MPS Digital Photography’s i3: Images, Ideas, Inspiration lecture series. Beckman is known for her photographs of the underground hip-hop scene in New York City, and for her high-profile brand campaign photography, as well as multiple books and exhibitions.

A virtual Open Studios event featuring work from the current participants of the Artist Residency Project, SVA’s fully online residency program. Artists will be joining from around the world and sharing their studios, as well as works created during their time in the residency program. Viewers are welcome to ask questions and participate in an open dialogue with the artists.

Thursday, March 17, 12:00 – 1:00pm ET | Revising Eastern Europe: Situated Practices and Authoritarian Regimes

In this talk presented by MA Curatorial Practice, Zdenka Badovinac, one of Eastern Europe’s most distinguished curators and museum directors, launches Situated Curating: Unannounced Voices of Change, a new book in the “Thoughts on Curating” series from Sternberg Press. Against the backdrop of spreading authoritarianism and the spiking numbers of the pandemic itself, Badovinac speaks with curator iLiana Fokianaki, artist Ištvan Išt Huzjan and St. Petersburg-based artist collective Chto Delat about reprised forms of oppression and emerging artistic responses of solidarity.

BFA Fine Arts presents a talk with Susan Hapgood, executive director of the International Studio and Curatorial Program in New York City. Hapgood has curated over 50 exhibitions, written approximately 70 journal articles and written and edited several books on varying topics in art.

Thursday, March 24, 6:00 – 7:30pm ET | Insurgent Practices Against Neoliberalism: Artists in a Changing New York City

Jane Dickson and Sarah Schulman join in a conversation with Shellyne Rodriguez (BFA 2011 Visual & Critical Studies) on their experiences as working artists and thinkers in a changing and unequal New York City. As artists living and working through the 1970s to the present in New York City, Schulman and Dickson have lived through one of the most fruitful periods of artistic production in New York—a time where the city was on the verge of bankruptcy, resources were at their scarcest and fear-mongering surrounding public transit safety ran rampant. This is also the period where the neoliberal experiment was unleashed on New York City and began to shift the way artists and people could live, make and be. Presented by the SVA Honors Program and BFA Visual & Critical Studies.

Tuesday, March 29, 7:00 – 8:30pm ET | Aundre Larrow

A talk with Jamaican-born, Brooklyn-based photographer and Adobe Creative Resident Aundre Larrow. Larrow has worked on the set of W. Kamau Bell’s TV series United Shades of America, and seeks to see the fundamental truth in each human being, regardless of background, culture or upbringing. For him, portraiture is the archeologist’s chisel, the biologist’s microscope, the physicist’s Large Hadron Collider. Presented by MPS Digital Photography as part of its 13: Images, Ideas, Inspiration lecture series.

Palestine Heirloom Seed Library founder Vivien Sansour joins “Food for the People” exhibition curator Samir Meghelli, critical theorist and filmmaker Elizabeth A. Povinelli and artist Jumana Manna in a conversation moderated by curator Ute Meta Bauer about food politics as a site of both damage and repair and what the future may hold.
