Tell us about your project. What inspired the idea?

My project is inspired by a line in Homer’s The Odyssey, translated by Robert Fagles. “When young Dawn with her rose-red fingers shone once more…” Personifying Dawn seems to be the standard epithet that Homer used to describe daybreak, so I took the idea and ran with it.

What most surprised you once you started working on the project?

What surprised me was how ambitious my story ended up being for filming, even though, for the most part, it takes place in one location with two main characters. This was my first time really tapping into the fantasy genre, and I’ve learned a lot about what steps to take next time in preparation for it. I’m forever thankful for my team being patient with me during the whole process.

What was the highlight of living and studying in New York City?

A highlight of living and studying in NYC for me is the diversity. Being exposed to various cultures, languages, personalities, beliefs and life experiences is a constant inspiration.

What is something you learned at SVA that you’ll always take with you?

Talk to everyone and don’t be afraid to ask for help. Everyone is making mistakes and learning just like you. Collaboration is super important as a growing artist.

Was there a teacher or course that was essential for you?

I loved all the courses I took from the humanities and sciences department at SVA and one of my favorites was my Chapbook class taught by Davida Singer. The class challenged me to take my storytelling outside the visual medium I’m most comfortable with, which I think is important for filmmakers to do every now and then.

What was your favorite piece of advice that a teacher or student shared with you?

This is an obvious one, but back up everything. I didn’t think it’d happen to me, but things happen, projects don’t save or hard drives crash. Always back up your work as soon as possible.

What advice do you have for next year’s students going through your program?

It’s okay to say no to some projects. It’s so easy to get burnt out. Recognize your burnouts and preserve yourself and your craft.
