MFA Computer Arts’ Digital Art Seminar instructor Trilby Schreiber invited artist and alumnus Erwin Redl (MFA 1995 Computer Art) to speak about his recent installation Whiteout at Madison Square Park. The commissioned public art project comprises of hundreds of suspended transparent white spheres, each embedded with a discrete, white LED light and it transform the urban landscape of New York City. The students not only got to meet Erwin and learn about his projects but were also given the opportunity to experience the installation during this private tour. Erwin shared his experiences and the long process of creating such a large scale installation starting with the endless proposals to the trial and errors of constructing Whiteout.

As a fine artist that works with technology and a current MFA Computer Arts student, it was a very revealing experience and the opportunity of being inside the installation. Erwin took the time to explain the inner works of conceptualization, planning, building and ultimately setting up on site. It’s not often you discover the technical aspect of a public installation of this magnitude, yet its complexities are invisible to the audience because it is an enriching and inspiring experience.
