This latest installment of Joes@Moes finds host and alumnus Zipeng Zhu (BFA 2013 Design) in conversation with Kevin O'Callaghan, Chair of the 3D Design department, known for his illustrious handlebar mustache.
A graduate of SVA (BFA 1980 Media Arts), O'Callaghan returned to teach at the College in 1985, and in 1999, founded the 3D Design department that he now chairs. Additionally, O'Callaghan teaches across several departments (BFA Design, BFA Advertising, Pre-College Program, CE Design), and is considered a true citizen and legend of the College.
His work has been featured on NBC, MTV and the History Channel, but he's best known for the inspired projects that have come out of his 3D Design class—fantastical, reimagined sculptures from discarded objects—that have gone on to appear in extraordinary exhibitions covered by CNN and other major media outlets.
“My art is with the students. It’s a shared thing that I’m most proud of. To be able to get the most out of the students as I possibly can,” he said recently. O'Callaghan's recent conversation with Zipeng covered teaching, the purity of new students and staying creative.
