Join BFA Fine Arts for a lecture from distinguished professor and vice dean of the Institute of Sci-Tech Arts, China Central Academy of Fine Arts, Zhang Ga. Ga has lectured on media art and culture around the world and published essays and edited books with the MIT Press, October, Flash Art International, Liverpool University Press, among others. Since 2015, he has directed Chronus Art Center in Shanghai and currently is also co-curator of ZKM | Hong Media Art Collection.

Wednesday, November 3, 6:00 – 8:30pm | Art & Activism—Our House: Claiming “Home” Through Art and Design (Online)

As we celebrate the fifth annual Art & Activism event, presented by SVA Continuing Education, the concept of home and all its definitions are explored. What does it mean to be at home in our bodies, our communities and our world as we navigate through these perilous times? Spend the evening hearing from artists who addressed how fallow buildings could be re-purposed for creatives in desperate need of affordable living spaces; an accomplished nonprofit leader creating space through community design; an artist-activist working with indigenous communities to save the Amazon utilizing performance art; and high school students expressing themselves about the ever-present threat of climate change through the art of animation.

Join photographer and Wendel White (BFA 1980 Photography) for a discussion of his work, which includes such projects as “Red Summer,” “Manifest,” “Schools for the Colored,” “Village of Peace: An African American Community in Israel” and “Small Towns, Black Lives.” Presented as part of MPS Digital Photography’s i3: Images, Ideas, Inspiration lecture series, now in its 10th year. A selection of images from the “Manifest” project are the subject of a Smithsonian Magazine article dedicated to the opening of the National Museum of African American History and Culture.

Wednesday, November 10 – Thursday, November 18 | SocDoc Showcase at DOC NYC | Online and at Cinepolis Chelsea Theatre, 260 West 23rd Street

MFA Social Documentary Film’s annual showcase of student work, “DOC NYC U: SVA,” includes six new films from current students and recent graduates. The screening is a part of DOC NYC, America’s largest documentary festival. The films screen online Wednesday, November 10, through Thursday, November 18 (available only in the U.S.), and in-person on Friday, November 12, 4:30pm, at the Cinepolis Chelsea theater. This screening will be followed by a Q&A with several members of the filmmaking teams. Tickets are required.

Friday, November 12, 5:00 – 6:30pm | Sunset Photo Walk

Discover the magic of the golden light and the blue hour with your camera and learn how to capture and mix them with the cityscape of Manhattan. During this New York City photo walk, travel photographer Esteban Toro will share his best composition tips, the process of planning a photograph and how to take advantage of the available light. Participants will be walking the Brooklyn Bridge and Dumbo in Brooklyn. Bring any camera you have available and discover the world through the lens of a traveler! Tuesday, November 16, 4:00 – 5:00pm | Will Hutnick (Online)

Join artist and curator Will Hutnick for a lecture about his work, presented by MFA Art Practice. Hutnick is a 2021 NYSCA/NYFA Artist Fellow in Painting, as well as a 2017 grant recipient from the Berkshire Taconic Foundation and a 2015 grant recipient from the Foundation for Contemporary Art. He is currently the Director of Artistic Programming at the Wassaic Project, a nonprofit organization that uses art and art education to foster positive social change.

SVA’s inaugural director of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI), Dr. Jarvis Watson, will host a virtual, interactive event discussing trauma, home and DEI work in the context of SVA community artwork from the Photoville exhibition “These Years.” This exhibition was created as a part of the fifth anniversary of SVA Continuing Education’s annual Art & Activism events series, in collaboration with Photoville and United Photo Industries.

Wednesday, November 17, 12:00 – 1:00pm | Natural and Cultural Heritage of the Future, Not the Past (Online)

Join members of Not An Alternative—a collective of artists, activists, cultural organizers and critical theorists that initiated traveling pop-up The Natural History Museum—to ask how new interpretations of cultural and environmental heritage can arise from connecting climate justice and land rights movements to the history of museums and the legacy of colonialism. Presented by MA Curatorial Practice.

Friday, November 19, 6:00 – 7:30pm | Community Lecture Series: Death and Dying—Ethical Considerations and Art-Based Interventions (Online)

In this virtual workshop, Lisa Furman, PhD, ATR-BC, LPC, will provide an art-based psychotherapeutic model for palliative and terminal illness care within the context of ethical practice. Ethical challenges in end-of-life care will be discussed. Participants will receive an overview of palliative care assessment domains as well as evidence-based population and culturally-specific interventions grounded in the creative process. Case examples using art-based interventions will be provided. Presented by MPS Art Therapy.
