BFA Fine Arts presents a virtual lecture by Kameelah Janan Rasheed, an artist who grapples with the poetics-pleasures-politics of Black knowledge production, information technologies, [un]learning and belief formation. They are an author, an educator and recipient of a 2022 Schering Stiftung Award for Artistic Research, a 2022 Creative Capital Award and a 2021 Guggenheim Fellowship in Fine Arts.

MA Curatorial Practice presents a panel addressing some of the polarizing debates we’ve seen this summer around large exhibitions such as documenta fifteen and the Berlin Biennale. Curator Maria Lind, art historian and critic Terry Smith, curator Claire Tancons and Anselm Franke, head of Visual Art and Film at HKW in Berlin, look toward the future to ask if there are lessons to be learned for curators.

A talk with Jeff Chien-Hsing Liao (MFA 2005 Photography and Related Media), a Taiwanese photographer who immigrated to the U.S. at the age of 22 in 1999, presented by MPS Digital Photography as part of its i3: Images, Ideas, Inspiration lecture series. Liao’s work has been featured in numerous solo and group exhibitions, and can be found in the permanent collections of several institutions such as the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston; Queens Museum, New York; Brooklyn Museum; J. Paul Getty Museum; George Eastman House-International Museum of Photography and Film, Rochester, New York; the Norton Museum of Art, West Palm Beach, Florida; JGS Howard Stein Collection, New York; The Pilara Foundation Collection, California; Allen G. Thomas Jr. Collection, North Carolina; the Deutsche Bank art collection and Los Angeles County Museum of Art.

MA Curatorial Practice presents James Meyer, author and curator of modern art at the National Gallery of Art, to speak on his new exhibition, “The Double.” Meyer was previously the Winship Distinguished Research Associate Professor of art history at Emory University and deputy director and chief curator of Dia Art Foundation. His exhibitions include presentations of Kerry James Marshall, Anne Truitt, Robert Morris and Mel Bochner, and the historical exhibitions “Los Angeles to New York: Dwan Gallery 1959 – 1971” (2016) and “The Double: Identity and Difference in Art Since 1900” (2022).

BFA Visual & Critical Studies and the SVA Honors Program present a talk by visiting scholar, philosopher and writer Marcus Quent. The lecture tries to explore which new artistic temporalities the ecological crisis inspires in the wake of long obsolete versions of both a liberal and postmodern “end of history.” The talk will address artistic practices and approaches that in our prevailing catastrophic scenario carry out unique work on the temporality of the ecological crisis and the intelligibility of time itself. The focus thus lies on how the form of time itself becomes an advanced object of artistic practice.

MA Curatorial Practice presents Amy Cheng, co-founder and curator of TheCube Project Space in Taipei, to discuss radio as a tool for artistic freedom. Cheng is a curator and writer based in Taipei. Founded in 2010, TheCube Project Space serves as an independent art space devoted to the research, production and presentation of contemporary art in Taipei. With the aim of delving into local culture and establishing long-term relationships with artists and cultural practitioners, Cheng explores the possibility of “expanding curating.”

MPS Art Therapy presents Yasmine Awais, ATR-BC, LCAT, LPC, ATCS, to interrogate the complexity of language and the power it holds. Person-first and identity-first verbal language will be described along with artistic forms of expression. Finally, guidelines to promote inclusivity with clients and supervisees will be discussed.
