SVA alumnus and photographer Ryan Pfluger’s (MFA 2007 Photography, Video and Related Media) credits are too many to list, but they include The New York Times, Los Angeles Times, Time, Washington Post, Variety, Teen Vogue, New York and just about every other major American publication you can name.
In the world of celebrity portraiture, Pfluger has become a go-to hire; a select few of the bold-faced names who he has worked with are Mary J. Blige, Pharrell, Steven Tyler of Aerosmith, Sam Smith, Chris Evans, Tom Ford, Meryl Streep, Alfre Woodard, Angelina Jolie and President Barack Obama. (Check out his Instagram for more.)
“Captivated by nostalgia, my work often deals with recreating memories, memorializing objects and how sexuality and gender influences image-making,” he writes. Born and raised in New York and currently residing in Los Angeles, Pfluger recently shot a cover and feature for The Hollywood Reporter, photographing director Janicza Bravo and playwright and screenwriter Jeremy O. Harris, the creative team behind the anticipated upcoming film Zola.
“I need to take a moment to note how incredibly special this shoot was, as I wish all commissions were like this,” Pfluger recently wrote of the assignment on Instagram.
