“Jaune Quick-to-See Smith: Memory Map”

The first New York retrospective of Jaune Quick-to-See Smith brings together five decades of Smith’s drawings, prints, paintings and sculptures. Smith reinterprets artistic traditions through the lens of her own cultural practice, reflecting the belief that her “life’s work involves examining contemporary life in America and interpreting it through Native ideology” while telling stories that flip commonly held conceptions of historical and cultural narratives.

Another first at the Whitney, “Josh Kline: Project for a New American Century” is the first U.S. museum survey of the artist’s work. Kline is best known for creating immersive installations using video, sculpture, photography and design to question how emergent technologies are changing human life. Using the technologies he scrutinizes—digitization, data collection, image manipulation, 3D printing, commercial and political advertising—Kline warns of urgent social and political issues and calls for a more human future.

“Abigail DeVille: Bronx Heavens”

A large-scale installation housing paintings and sculptures related to familial histories and history of the Bronx, examining the myths and realities of local, familial and ancestral histories and the convoluted notion of freedom in a country fraught with oppression and racism.

“Sarah Sze: Timelapse”

A site-specific series by Sarah Sze (MFA 1997 Fine Arts) that blurs the boundaries between painting, sculpture, sound, print, drawing, video and architecture. As they weave through the Guggenheim, Sze’s overflowing artworks create a choreographed path for visitors that highlights how timelines are built through collective experience and memory while simultaneously translating the digital age’s overload of images into kaleidoscope installations.

“Funk You Too! Humor and Irreverence in Ceramic Sculpture”

A bright and humorous exhibition of 50 ceramic artworks that employ clay as a tool of critique and satire. In this show, pieces by artists of the originating Funk Art generation are placed next to work by contemporary artists who are expanding on the movement’s legacy of subversion and expressive figuration.

“Made in Japan: 20th-Century Poster Art”

After two world wars, rapid industrialization, urbanization and the rise of mass media, modern Japan turned to its history of rich visual culture and printmaking tradition to revamp its global and domestic image. This survey of Japanese poster design explores the cultural and political shifts within modern Japan that influenced the functions and messaging of its advertising posters, and how those posters were received by the public.

“Black Power to Black People: Branding the Black Panther Party”

An exhibition chronicling how the Black Panther Party devised a specific graphic language to control its own narrative, brand Black nationalism and mobilize the community towards communal revolution.

“Vulnerable Landscapes”

Artists and activists come together to examine how climate change is affecting one of New York City’s most ecologically vulnerable landscapes: Staten Island. Through paintings, photography, scientific documentation of resiliency efforts and archival materials, this exhibition examines the shared space between the built and natural environment and highlights local individuals advocating for climate justice.
